The new champion

I have for many years contended that "Kashmir," by Led Zeppelin, is the most pretentious song in rock history.

I apologize. I was wrong. "Kashmir" has slipped to No. 2.

The most pretentious song in rock history is "Achilles Last Stand," by Led Zeppelin.

Unless you're disqualifying it from the rock label, I would nominate "Macarthur Park" by either Richard Harris or Donna Summer.

I suspected you wouldn't let that one land in the "rock" category. But I'd argue it as a strong contender for most pretentious song in any category ever.

I love "For Your Life" and "Nobody's Fault but Mine" from that album. But "Achilles"? Those guys are so pretentious they didn't even use an apostrophe.

The apostrophe comment made me choke a little on my kiwi/strawberry flavored water. No worries - I'm ok.

Obviously "baddest" is way different from (than?)(nah, from) "most pretentious" so a lot gets eliminated from the competition.

I'd put "Stah-air-way to Heh-eh-vehn" up against any song, any time.

Ah, I beg to differ. "Kashmir" reigns supreme for me.

Did you know that if you play the song backward it's called "rimhsaK"?

Well, thank heavens it's not "Stairway to Heaven."

I think the release of "Houses of the Holy" marked the start of the band's Pretentious Period.

Yeah, I usually skip over "Houses" and "Physical Graffiti" in my collection and go right for "Presence."

Got a piece of trivia for you, Mr. Music. My favorite Zepp song was Jimmy Page's least favorite because it offended this girlfriend. It was also never played live. Know what it is?
