The air is heavy, as it always is after it rains on a warm day. The once-blue sky blends silvers and grays into an overcast with the texture of lumpy gravy. Fishing gear in hand, I am wading through ripples and runs in a small stream.

Suddenly, they converge:

Gnats! Gnats! They fly under my hat! They say, “We’re going to bite you, Pat. We’re hungry for blood, and to us, you look fat. We're mean as mosquitoes and bolder than rats. We'll swarm in your face till you think you'll go bats!”

I could not get away from them, and that is that. I ran back to my truck in a minute flat.

Dr. Seuss would be proud, I've no doubt. Why, why do they even exist? Another one of life's big questions.

I had no idea that was going to be Suess-ish until I typed "Gnats!" Then it just happened.

I'm glad you didn't intend Seuss-ishness until the word "Gnats!"

It took me unspeakably longer to catch on.

I'm trying to write more often, but the problem is that when I sit down to write, I usually don't know what's going to emerge on the screen. In this case, I started feeling Suess-ish, and I figured, "Why not go with it?" I didn't have much else to say, really.

Once again, I'm giggling to myself in a highly-inappropriate place. This time, a public computer lab that was, before I started snickering, eerily quiet.

Thanks for helping me shatter the atmosphere. :P

If I can make someone laugh, I've had a good day.
