Sometimes the joke doesn't register

Every now and then I like to mess with cashiers' heads, but in a humorous way. I figure they deal with enough jerks during the day that they might appreciate a laugh.

Every once in a while, though, it backfires. Like yesterday. I was checking out of Staples when the cashier asked if I had a Staples Rewards card.

"Are you a Rewards customer?" she asked.

"No. In fact, I'm a demerits customer," I said.

Her answer was a puzzled look.

I explained, "Every time I shop here, the store gives me demerits. If I get enough of them, they ban me from shopping here."

She gave me another puzzled look as she counted out my change.

"Thank you," I said and headed for the door. Just before I got there, she called out, "You didn't get any demerits today." I turned around and smiled.

The woman who had been behind me in line shook her head and rolled her eyes. It was clear her ire wasn't directed toward the cashier.

I'm glad the cashier joined in at the end. Nice.

My mother was once in a restaurant and ordered Crab Louis. The waitress asked her what kind of dressing she wanted on it and my mother said, "Louis dressing, of course."

Presently the waitress came back and said, "The cook's Chinese and he doesn't know anything. What kind of dressing do you want?"
