The cure

I should be cured of Guitar Acquisition Syndrome after I've got this in my hands: a Gibson SG Special bass. My wonderful wife thought it would be a nice anniversary present. Mine is being built now in the factory; I'm told I'll have it in 4-6 weeks.

If this model looks familiar, here's one of its ancestor cousins in the hands of my bass-playing idol: young Jack Bruce, playing here with Cream.

Jack Bruce, ask the majority who sang lead vocals in Cream , when you tell them , invariably they'll answer " oos ee "

Bruce along with Andy Fraser ( listen to Frasers work during Mr Big and dig it brother) must both rate in the top ten bassist ever.

Bruce is No. 1 on my bassists list for lots of reasons besides his bass playing. Look at the respect he's held in by all the talented people he's played with in a wide range of genres. Then there's the length of his career. Then there's the fact that he's not just a bassist—he can play a range of instruments. He's written good-to-great songs for a very long time. And finally, he survived playing with Ginger Baker.
