Out of the mouths of babies

I ask my first-semester writing students to write six 350-word essays over the course of a semester. And here's a line from an essay I just reviewed:

I constantly hear from students in this class that they are so stressed out because of the essays they have to write.

Just shoot me.

Maybe they thought they'd registered for a math class, and that they'd be writing equations.

I try hard to remember that most of the students in my classes are there because they want to learn, and they realize they need to start developing professional work habits. When I see a comment like this one, though, I wonder if the message is getting through. Most of these students are young men and women. A few are just kids in the 13th grade.

No, just shoot THEM. 350 words? For crying out loud, they ought to be able to do that standing on their heads. (I was up to 22 words at the end of the third sentence.) Multiply by 16 and you're done! That is really S A D. You are doing them a favor.

Their final essay will be longer—which probably will lead to weeping and gnashing of teeth.
