Fall foliage in this part of the country can be spectacular, a blast of colors that make the hills look like piles of hard candy, scenes that under a blue sky make you want to grab a camera, drive into the country and take a picture of everything. But not this year. When my favorite maple tree by the side of the road flamed red, as it does every year except when it flames orange or gold, the color lingered for less than a week before the leaves dropped from the wooden skeleton and the surrounding trees. It wasn’t fair.

not as much color here
On our recent drive to Massachusetts, (yes, we did actually leave home for a brief vacation!) the trees seemed much more colorful the further away from home we traveled. We thought it was because our trees simply hadn't turned yet, but we actually have quite a few skeletons already. I'm guessing there's a weather-related scientific explanation, but I have no idea what it would be.
