Eat healthy—up to a point

Good for what ails ya, but a little too tasty


I've been doing pretty well with a New Year's resolution to take better care of myself. Part of the plan involves taking vitamins every day: a multivitamin, and a B12 supplement that's supposed to be good for my brain. (The jury's out on that one. And it probably will stay out.)

There's just one problem with the multivitamin: I bought it in gummy form. (Yes, they make gummies for grown-ups too.) It's peach flavored and as sweet as candy. In fact, the bottle of them is within arm's length as I'm typing this. I have to admit to chomping down on one or two of them when my sweet tooth has come calling.

Quite clearly, vitamins as gummies (for me, anyway) is an idea that's just a little too good. Once this jar runs out, it's back to pills.

Careful with those! I once ate an entire jar of the gummy flinstones jellies while studying, after I told myself, "it's OK, they're vitamins!" Not so. I made myself very ill. Lesson learned.

An entire jar? Wow. Then again, it might have been healthier for you than snorting someone else's Ritalin as a study aid.

B12 better be good for something--I don't absorb it properly, so I have to get a shot every few months or so. I would hate to think all those needles were for nothing!

I just went online to find out the significance of the B vitamins, and it looks like the most serious health concern is that a lack of B12 can cause anemia.

I've been meaning to try these, but maybe I shouldn't. I can see myself eating the whole jar in a day.

It's another one of those things that I know are bad for me—like a one-pound box of chocolates, say—but I still gobble them up like all the food on Earth has disappeared and the chocolate (or the vitamins) is all that's left.

Those are the best vitamins ever. Who says adults shouldn't enjoy a fruit-flavored gummy? Man, kids these days get all the perks.

I have zero willpower—none—when it comes to sweets. And it's especially bad when the sweets are artificially flavored and colored. I've been known to eat so many Sour Patch Kids in one sitting that my teeth actually wind up sore from the sugar coating scouring the enamel.

I eat sour patch kids until I physically can't because the roof of my mouth is so roughed up. It's a problem, but a delicious problem.
