Now dig this

title or description
Never in a million years will I be able to play like the great Jack Bruce, but hey—a guy can dream, can't he?

After my lesson today, the guy who is teaching me how to play the bass guitar said, "Your groove is good."

Yeah, baby.

I was listening to Charles Mingus today and like always it made me want to play bass again, so much.

Play "again"? You used to play?

Yep, I played in a jazz big band in high school, and in a four-piece rock band a few years ago.

Why did you stop playing?

I had to sell my bass in college, to pay for something else. (I was borrowing someone else's to play in the gigging band a couple years ago.)

Sorry to hear that. Hope you can buy one again someday. I've found playing is a good way to get away from myself.

There are plenty of other musical instruments in this house -- guitar, keyboards, my tenor sax -- but bass is the one I really miss. It's probably what I most enjoyed playing, except maybe bassoon but that's hardly practical :)

I tried to learn guitar about 20 years ago, but I wasn't making any progress, so I got frustrated, so I quit practicing, so I made even less progress, etc.

Tenor sax, eh? The first word that comes to mind when I hear the word "saxophone" is Coltrane.
