Quizzical

I'm grading a quiz I gave last Thursday:

Question: What state is noted for its population of Aleuts?

Student answer: Ohio
Student answer: New York

Well, have you actually CHECKED the population of Aleuts in Ohio and New York? The answers could be surprising.

New York is 10th in the nation in combined American Indian, Eskimo and Aleut population, but I think most of that number is American Indians. I live about half an hour from a Seneca Nation of Indians territory (they consider their land to be a sovereign nation, so I won't use the word "reservation") and the Senecas have more territory about an hour north of here. Plus, the state is home to American Indians of the Cayuga, Oneida, Onondaga, St. Regis Mohawk, Tonawanda Seneca, and Tuscarora tribes; the Tonawanda Seneca are not the Senecas I referred to earlier. I think most of the Aleut population growth is in the West of the continental U.S., and I would wager New York is home to more Amish people than Aleut people.

Ohio does not rank in the top 10.

I forgot to mention that the correct answer, Alaska, was in their review materials.
