It's (un)official

So Mitt Romney declares himself to be an "unofficial Southerner"?

Then I declare myself to be an "unofficial Rastafarian." Even setting the herb aside (which I did 32 years ago), I've still got a helluva lot more cred than "Grits" Romney.

And yet, out of the likely contenders, he is the one who scares me the least.

Romney's history of flip-floppery guarantees he'd be as steady in the presidency as a box kite in a Class 5 hurricane. However, I prefer to think of him as a piñata, and I doubt he can get elected.

Santorum? He gets whackier every day. Any day I expect him to announce he's from Mars.

Gingrich? Best description of him I've seen is that he talks the way dumb people think smart people talk.

Paul? Can't we just bundle him up with a bunch of old newspapers and stick him out by the curb?

I don't think any of them can get elected. But that is what I thought about Dubya, especially the second time around. If the president is going to be someone clearly unqualified, I'd prefer it be someone like Romney - someone who has good manners, doesn't talk like he's completely insane (out of touch is OK), isn't plain mean or completely incompetent.

Doesn't leave much, I know. But there's a fear in me that one of the Repubs COULD win.

Charlie Pierce says Romney sees two classes of people: people like himself, and the help. Whenever I see him on TV, I start shouting at him.

But when I see Santorum on TV, I shout so loudly that he can hear me.
