Here's Charlie Pierce writing this morning in his politics blog at Esquire.com:

What also is obvious is the fact that Rick Santorum blew his main chance over the past couple of weeks, primarily by being a colossal dick, and have I mentioned recently what a colossal dick he is? He couldn't resist a chance to let his freak flag fly on the proper use of other people's ladyparts and on his peculiar vision of what the separation of church and state actually means. He picked a fight with John F. Kennedy on the latter issue, which may be the most singularly stupid thing I've seen a candidate do in 50 years. And last night, after spending a month channelling Pius XII, according to the exit polls, he lost decisively among Catholic voters to a Mormon bishop. This proves three: one, that there is no such thing as a "Catholic vote"; two, that the Catholic laity remains completely convinced that contraception is their own damn business and that the clan of the red beanie should butt out of it; and three, that picking on the sainted Jack Kennedy (God be good to him) is generally considered far more mortal a sin than using the Pill is. Santorum could have avoided all of these unforced errors, but that would require that he not be a colossal dick, and you might as well expect to see Willard Romney on stage with Parliament-Funkadelic.

If a Dem said anything bad about Reagan, even hinting that he might have dyed his hair, he'd be shredded by the Repubs. Santorum takin on JFK... well, I think no one spoke up because he's a train wreck in motion and we're just letting him hang himself.

It is just impossible for me to fathom what anyone, even a very conservative person, could possibly see in Santorum that would make them think, "Hey, he'd be great as president!"

It is hard to beleive that Rick Santorum found a woman in this century that embraces his views and has borne his children. I do wonder how many of his children will forgo college in order to avoid the snobbery and the liberal molding of their thoughts. John F. Kennedy saw an absolute division of church and state Apparently, this makes Santorum want to throw up. While Kennedy saw a division, Santorum createa a division. I guess the liberal professors did a good job with me. Just like the author, I can spot a dick too.

If Santorum has any sense, he's going to tone down his anti-female rhetoric. But it's too late. We've already seen him for what he is: one of the finest minds of the mid-1950s.

I'm Catholic, and Republican, and I give Charlie a big ol' "Amen."

On top of that, the guy's from Pennsylvania.

One thing I'll say about Pierce: He takes pretty strong runs at Obama sometimes, too. Either earlier this week or sometime last week, he let loose with a blast.
