Truth (if only I could believe it)

"The essence of being human is that one does not seek perfection, that one is sometimes willing to commit sins for the sake of loyalty, that one does not push asceticism to the point where it makes friendly intercourse impossible, and that one is prepared in the end to be defeated and broken up by life, which is the inevitable price of fastening one's love upon other human individuals." — George Orwell

That's exactly what I thought when I read it. But the more I think about the Orwell quotation, the more uncertain I am as to whether it provides comfort or instead confirms the idea of "a little older, a little more confused."

Orwell can be tough to argue with.

"Fastening one's love" -- what a wonderful turn of phrase.

I hadn't thought of it, but now that you mention it, I'm wondering if "fastening" love "upon" someone sounds a bit one-sided.

It does. But that's not necessarily an inaccurate description of love, is it? Sometimes we love people in spite of themselves, or ourselves.

Touche. I did actually spend the last two days at work making a video. My week's allotment of tech skills are completely expended.
