Just wondering

If necessity is the mother of invention, then what is the father?

("Frank Zappa" is not an acceptable answer.)

At the risk of starting a sexist thread here, I'd say, "desire" is the father.

Start all the sexist, snarky, sarcastic threads you want. This is the place for it.

I was trying to think of what else would inspire someone to invent something, and all I could think of was untethered consumerism and our societal cry of, "I want, I want, I want..." but then I worried that maybe readers would think I was saying that was a male characteristic.

Flo & Eddie? (Did some searching on Mothers of ... and was reminded they'd been in the group for awhile.)

I saw Flo & Eddie in their own band in the Boston Garden in Spring 1973. The great Aynsley Dunbar was their drummer. They opened for Alice Cooper. It was an interesting night.

That may be our winner.

It's "incentive" -- as in "what's in it for me."

"Incentive" could work.

"I need something. Huh, I have some time on my hands, so let's make it."

The cliché surfaced in my brain Sunday when I was trying to re-hang a door, trying to hold it up with one arm so the hinges would stay aligned with the holes for the screws. I wasn't clever enough to be able to do that, so I spotted a screwdriver lying on the floor and tried to use my foot to nudge the blade of the screwdriver under the door to hold it up.

It didn't work, so I figured I should have not only summoned invention's mother, but also its father. But I didn't know who he was. But wait, wait, wait! Has the gender of "invention" ever been ascertained?
