"One of the things I will talk about, that no president has talked about before, is I think the dangers of contraception in this country [ … ] It's not okay. It's a license to do things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be." — Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum

If you want to hear the quotation in its context (which makes the quotation more worrisome, to be honest), you can find the interview here. Scroll forward to about the 17:30 mark:

(Santorum speaks)

I listened to the entire interview up to that point. By the 20 minute mark, I’d had enough.

I couldn't get any sound, but still: HAhahahahahaha - the dangers of contraception - HAHAHAHahahahaha - whew! Good one, Rick.

You may want to track down that interview yourself and give it a listen. Lots of "did he really just say that?" moments, and not in a good way.

Got it. My repeated need to unplug and haul my computer tower all over Rick Santorum's God's creation had me plugging in the speakers to the wrong port. Must be I did something to piss his God off and that's why my files were decimated.

After listening to him for 20 minutes, I doubled up on my blood pressure meds for today.

I think there is logical criticism out there about why the government shouldn't fund contraception (at least to the extent that it does). Rick Santorum obviously has not heard of logical criticism.

In the interview he says he'll do away with federal aid for contraception, but I didn't listen long enough to hear if he elaborated on it. I don't know enough about the matter to offer an informed opinion. Do you want to elaborate (but only if you feel like it)?

My criticism has nothing to do with violating the sexual realm or whatever Santorum says. I just find it to be impractical in cases. I don't know a ton about the subject, but I know that at least in NY, the state provides funding for contraception at many of its health clinics (including CattCo). The majority of people can go into a clinic and get contraception at little to no cost, and from what I understand from talking with the people there, that comes from state funding--not federal. So unless there are places where Planned Parenthood exists and a health clinic doesn't (perhaps in larger cities they are more spread out?), I find the federal funding redundant.

Thanks for elaborating. What I find more disturbing than his threatened elimination of federal funding for contraception is his insistence that he knows what's right for every couple in every situation. He's an opponent of big government, but he wants to stick his nose into people's bedrooms. There are way more important issues to worry about.
