Something a dog taught me

Over the past week, Sherry and I have been dog-sitting for a friend who was out of town. His dog is about five years old, a Labrador retriever full of friendliness—a big puppy, really. In an inspired bit of humorous irony, his owner named him Spike.

This past week we taught Spike how to catch a street hockey ball. We did this indoors, so it didn't involve huge heights and long distances. But Spike couldn't catch a ball before, so even if he was catching little tosses, it was a small triumph.

It didn't matter to Spike if he caught the ball, though. If he did, fine; if he didn't, no big deal. He had fun either way. I need to remember that.

Dogs are some of the most genuine creatures we have the pleasure of knowing.

I'd rather spend time with my dogs than with a lot of people I know—and I mean a lot.
