Poem: Cold Coffee

Really, I should have just had a cup of coffee with you,
Five minutes—no, less:
Look at the time! Gotta run.

But no. We drank, we drank until
The caffeine jacked me up,

And then the crash,
Cup shattered,
Saucer slivers,
Cold linoleum teaspoon rattle.

I should have run,
Should have taken a moment to look at my watch
And realize how precious the seconds were
That I let tick away while my
Coffee grew cold with you.

It calls to mind the time I wasted visiting with a once-but-no-longer friend at my 30th class reunion. I finally got up the nerve to simply stand and walk away from the table, realizing I owed her nothing and that I didn't want to spend another torturous second with her.

"Sorry, I have to go clean my navel" always is a gracious exit line.

I think you've just hit on the next big thing - The "Little Bitty Book of Exit Lines" on sale at Amazon for $9.95, or $17.99 at your local Hallmark store. Can I be a contributing writer?

"If you'll excuse me, I must get home to watch some dust settle."

"Forgive me, but I'm quite sure I forgot to set the DVR to record that infomercial on Ch-ch-ch-chia pets."

That book would sell. It absolutely would sell. I hope no one's following this thread.

Go ahead and write it; just mention me in the acknowledgments.
