Many years ago someone sharing my name died locally. Shortly after that, my mother got a letter from the county assessor-recorder asking about removing my name from the property we owneed jointly. She went into their office and she said people kept coming out of the back to stare curiously at her. They asked if I was dead and they didn't seem to believe her when she said no. Eventually I guess she convinced them I was still around.

It would have been cool if your mom had gone along with them and started filling out the paperwork and then have you walk into the room. It would have been cooler if you were all wrapped up in bloody gauze like a mummy.

My mother preferred to baffle people with obscure quotations and superior intellect rather than go for the gory, but I would have totally done that.

There's a great section in Annie Dillard's autobiography, An American Childhood, where she describes her mom—who sounds an awful lot like your description of your mom.
