Shoot out the lights

title or description

Saturday, Oct. 8, State Theater, Ithaca: the incomparable Richard Thompson.

Look for Sherry and me in the fifth row, orchestra right, just off the aisle.

How do you know about all these fantastic concerts? Is there some sort of email list? I always come late to the party. aka, miss all the good seats.

I have the Town Ballroom and the Tralf's websites bookmarked and check their calendars once a week. I am going to bookmark the website of the arena where Thompson is playing so I can keep track of their calendar.

Various online ticket vendors (Ticketmaster) and concert organizers (Dan Small) send me periodic updates, too. That's how I found out about Thompson. I was a little disappointed there: tickets went on sale July 29. Probably could have scored some really fine seats.

I also periodically check the websites of my favorite performers and am on their distribution lists that announce tours and shows.

I am psyched for Thompson. For my money, he is the best electric guitarist around today: sleek like Mark Knopfler, but with much more imagination and better chops to boot. And he's a great songwriter too.

My next show is in Rochester: Steve Earle with his band. Road trip for Chris, Hanch and me. Should be a hoot.

That does sound fantastic. Steve Earle? I'm salivating. One of my school-year resolutions (since it's a bit early for new year's) is to see more shows. Often some good offerings swing by Buffalo. Not a bad place to start, for me.

Concerts are one of the few places where I can shed my skin—for a couple of hours, anyway.
