It's no game

Tonight I was coasting on my bicycle on a paved path lined with all manner of bushes on one side. I went around a slight curve, and there stood a deer in its summer coat the color of a new penny, munching on some leaves. I was maybe 10 yards from it. My bike coasts with a mere whisper; clearly, the deer hadn't heard me coming.

We looked each other in the eye. Had I stayed on the right side of the path, I would have been close enough to almost touch it. Instead, I drifted to the left side of the path and continued coasting. The only other thing moving was my head as I watched the deer, expecting it to bolt at any second.

It watched until I was safely past, then resumed munching on the leaves. That's as close as I've ever been to a deer in the wild. The neat part, though, was how it didn't run away.

It sounds magical, like that scene with the deer in Stand By Me... except yours was real.

Sherry said it was probably because the deer was used to seeing people on the trail. Damn. I thought it was that whole "I won't hurt you" vibe I tried to put out.
