Calling all cars

A police car passed me today, driving in the other direction, and for some reason the decals and painting splashed all over the side of the car got me wondering:

Do police departments have contests to see who can have the most gaudily decorated cars? The most Space-Age-Meets-the-Dance-Floor-Meets-Video-Game lights? And what's the cost to taxpayers of all this indulgence?

I thought back to my boyhood and the New York State Police cars: black and white, like this:

title or description

No fancy decals taking up the entire side of the car. No array of Star Wars lights. But there's no mistaking it's a police car, is there?

I love the fact that so many of them drive huge gas-guzzlers. At a time when every governmental budget on every level is strapped for cash, having police cars that get seven miles to the gallon is really pretty swell!

Another one of my gripes is that I'll be cruising along the highway going the speed limit when somebody driving a state-registered vehicle goes blowing by me like it's the Daytona 500.

So many other things in life can be compared in this way, the jazzed-up-super-deluxe version vs. the no-bells-or-whistles-but-it'll-get-you-where-you've-gotta-go deal.

Advertisers are great at creating "needs" for the latest thing, aren't they? I've had the same cellphone for going on two years now; I'm hopelessly behind the times.
