Is this what started Hendrix talking about sixes and nines do you think - singing about math in school? I never understood that quote. av

Hadn't thought of the Hendrix angle. The quote only makes sense in the context of the rest of the lyrics of that song.

Ain't no such thing
About 7 years ago while substitute teaching an Algebra class, I incorrectly, according to the classroom teacher, showed the students a way to balance an equation the way I had been taught in the late 60's. Accordingly, as I was being told the error of my ways, I asked this bright young math teacher why the students crossed out and switched certain positive and negative signs to balance the equation. Her explanation was simple, "There is no such thing as subtraction, only the addition of negative numbers. Sing it or say it, Subtraction, Ain't no such thing.

Now if the six turned out to be nine, I don't mind.
