Things we hate, Oct. 24

TV weather jargon: "It's going to be a rain event tonight," as per WGRZ-TV's (Buffalo) Kevin O'Connell just moments ago. No, Kevin: It's going to rain.

Seriously. For all their maps and gadgets, I don't think they're any more accurate than looking out the window or seeing the leaves turn over.

I think the Weather Outside guy on Channel 7 should do just that: wander around the set lot (which should be down by the lake), look up at the clouds, check out the leaves, look for bugs under rocks, lick his finger and hold it up in the air, and then make a forecast. I bet it would be the top-rated weather segment in Buffalo TV news.

You need to suggest that - I for one would tune in regularly.

That drives me crazy too.

Also the use of "most unique." That is a favorite phrase used in radio commercials for restaurants here.

That's pretty awesome.

If a large group of people put on fancy hats and danced in the streets while it rained, THAT would be a rain event. I hope I'm invited.

I would go only if the hats were free.

And yes, sometimes I am quite literal... if foggy.
Just taking this a different direction - perhaps having an "event" indicates a finite period for the activity. You could just have rain... with no end in sight. Be like us - our fog lasted for nearly two weeks - I got to thinking it was no longer an event but our reality. :) I would have been happy to just have a fog event. The answer with the party hats was funnier - what a visual.

You're giving some/many forecasters the benefit of a doubt that they don't deserve. Their use of the language shows they don't think in such subtle terms.

I've seen video of the fog. Wow. What's it been like living in it?

In a word - yucky. Another word - depressing. You awake to it, work through it and go to bed with it. It was relentless in this part of the Puget Sound. I tried taking pictures, but I lack the skill to make it just atmospheric - my photos were more like fog that allows monsters to slip into town...

I'm going to start referring to little things in my life as events. For example, tomorrow I will engage in a teaching event. In the evening, I'll participate in a television event. By midnight, a sleeping event will consume me.

See how much more exciting that is?

This is brilliant, Danielle. I need to go take part in another coffee event before getting ready for today's work event.

I feel so much more accomplished now, even at this early hour.
